Although most people might consider Florida their paradise -- I never did. While growing up in Ft. Lauderdale, I would often dream of the day I would finally get the chance to move away. Even at a very young age I knew I wanted to call Virginia my home. It was during a family road trip, (one of my fondest memories) from Florida to New York and all the states in between, that I fell in love with this gorgeous state I now call home. While mom was always talking about wanting to move to North Carolina, I was immediately going on and on about Virginia -- "Can we move here! Please. Please? Pleeeaaase!!! I don't wanna go back home!"
Fast forward 20 years, and I have finally made my dreams come true. One of my favorite things about living in Virginia, aside from the stunning scenery, rich history, unique festivals, and delicious food -- I am now only 2 hours away from awesome places like Washington DC! I have to tell you, I love living in the Mid-Atlantic. I love being able to travel locally without breaking the bank. It is a great big world out there and I am fortunate enough to finally be where I am.
It has probably been close to 20 years since my last trip to DC, and wow did I not realize all there is to do and see! Visit the Smithsonian, Tour the National Monuments and Memorials, walk the avenues and admire the river views. It seems like everyone around is enjoying their time on cute red bicycles too! These bikes are known as the Capital Bikeshare, which allows you to borrow one of over 2500 bicycles, from your choice of over 300 stations across Washington, D.C., Arlington, Alexandria, and Montgomery County, MD. For a small fee you will be riding in style and when you get tired, just return the bike to any station in your area.
No matter the time of day or year you are visiting, there is never really a bad time to be in DC. Although, I highly recommend seeing it in all of its night-light-glory! You won't have any issues finding parking and the monuments look absolutely stunning illuminated at night. Definitely take a Monuments by Moonlight Night Trolly Tour if you have the time. You will get to enjoy a 2.5 hour long, entertaining and informative tour through the nation's capital.
I had a fantastic time during this day trip, and there is still so much more to experience in DC. I am grateful for the fond memories that returned since my last trip -- even more grateful for the new ones made. Best of all, was finally coming to a wonderful realization about myself -- I truly enjoy my life, I have a serious passion for travel, and I love looking at life through a lens. Especially, when looking at the people of the world individually. We are just so naturally beautiful even without trying. Often without ever even realizing it.
When in DC -- when anywhere in life -- always take the time to truly appreciate all that is around you.
Life moves fast, so we must remember to take it slow.
